After the news broke that NBC Universal was planning on buying local television network llc for $315 million, there was much discussion about the acquisition’s financial implications.
NBC’s plans for the local television network business were actually pretty simple. NBC has about 18,000 stations. Its network, NBC, has about 36,000 stations. So when they combined these two, they could get a lot of local programming, the same programming that has made NBC so successful.
This is important because it shows that as the largest cable company in the US, Comcast is the perfect company to begin a cable network. Comcast has very few channels, about 1,000, so with a local network at the core, they could easily get some pretty big viewers, and NBC could get a lot of cash.

That’s because Comcast is the only one that has the rights to air local programming. So it’s only fair that NBC share the local programming rights with Comcast.
