It’s true, you will often hear about the “sports career fair” or the “sports career track” when it comes to recruiting, but what is a career fair exactly? Well, it is the “self-awareness” of what a person “thinks” about a career. There are three levels of self-awareness. The first is what a person “thinks” about their job. The second is the “feelings” of what a job entails.
The third is how a person thinks about his/her career. That is the level at which a person wants to keep his/her job, or at least the level at which they are most likely to keep their job. Obviously, this is not the only way to self-consciously think about a career. Anyone who is a musician knows that even when you think you’re just playing, you’re really in a band.
The first level of self-awareness is about what a person thinks about the position he holds (e.g. a manager for a TV show). It’s the part of a person that decides whether or not the person is in control of their career and how they want to handle it. The second level is about how a person thinks about the position.
the job of a manager is one of those positions that is a lot of the time out of sight. It’s the person who decides how things work, defines the rules, and hires and fires the people that work for him. The third level is about the person doing the thinking.
We hear from a lot of people about how managers are like the guy who picks the paint color for their house. Its the guy who is the person that is in charge of the color scheme. Its a position that is not only out in the open, it is something that can be seen (and even interacted with) by all.
The fact is that I can’t name all the people who have worked over the years in the past, because I don’t know who are responsible for it.
I know that I have worked for and had to deal with many people who were in a position to make decisions. Some people were managers, some people were contractors, some people were even in positions that could not make those decisions. What I have learned from my years of working is that there are some people that are not above criticism. They might not say anything to you, but they will be looking down and you might be lucky enough to become a little less of a dick.
I’m not saying you can’t be too critical, but be prepared to learn. I’ve known many people that have worked in the game industry who have been very good at making decisions, and who did not hesitate to take criticism. It’s just about making sure that you’re not the guy that gets fired.
The one thing a lot of people don’t realize is that you have to have a great deal of self-awareness to be able to take criticism well, especially if it is directed at your own work. Even if you think you work hard and think your decisions are right, if you take the criticism personally, you will get fired faster than you think. It takes a lot of skill to handle criticism and make decisions and this is something that takes time.
But what happens if you dont think you do? What if you just take it with a grain of salt and continue to work for a company? If you dont work hard, you will not make it in the entertainment industry. If you dont take criticism with a grain of salt you will not have a great deal of self-awareness.
